CHAPTER 2
OBJECTIVES AND RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
2.1 INTRODUCTION
The study was conducted to find if the Selected Newspapers while reporting
the Commonwealth Games 2010 were influenced by the Government of India’s
campaign to associate the successful organization of the Commonwealth Games 2010,
with the national honour, and thereby did the Selected Newspapers derail from
reporting the mismanagement and misappropriation of funds involved in organizing
the event.
The research contained content analysis of news stories of the Selected
Newspaper dating from January 1st 2010 to December 31st 2010 in reference to the
Commonwealth Games.
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the research design, the procedures
that were followed, the subjects of the study, the instruments that were developed for
data collection, and the methods for data analysis.
2.2 INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH
What is Research?
The word “Research” means a search for facts; it is a process to find answers
and to explain problems. It is an empirical investigation undertaken in a systematic
way to find response to unsolved facts and to clarify doubts due to misunderstood
facts. (Krishnaswami, 2008:1)

of communication that is documented in some form or the other.

2.6 QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
The news articles from The Hindu and The Times of India that suggested
following criteria were chosen as a part of data analysis.
The articles in the Selected Newspaper connoting the interferences of
nationalistic ideas or notion in the statements given by the Government of India and
associates of the Commonwealth Games 2010 in reference to the preparation of the
Commonwealth Games 2010.
The interaction of the Government Authorities with the Selected Newspaper
such as Prime Minister of India, Chief Minister of Delhi, and Chairman of the
organizing committee of Commonwealth games, Union minister of Sports, Former
Union Sports Minister.
The research examined if the Selected Newspaper had directly quoted the
government communication or if the news articles represented views from the
selected newspapers as well. The news reports were also observed for their direct or
indirect relevance to the Commonwealth Games 2010 or if they were sweeping
statements made by the concerned leaders embedding reactionary nationalism in their
message to the people to justify excessive use of public funds.
The news reports in the Selected Newspaper were further cross checked with
secondary sources such as the report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India
published in 2009 and magazines such as Tehelka, India Today, and business oriented
newspapers such as Business Standard and Economic Times published prior to the
games between 2009 and 2010 to check the developments and validity of fact since
the games was awarded in 2003.

This chapter outlined the design of the study, the research methodologies
selected and the specific procedures that is the Qualitative Data analysis and the
Content Analysis. Subjects, themes and methods used for the analysis are also
explained.
