Kimberly's Thesis: Chapt. 5: Conclusions

Conclusion

The main objective of the thesis was to show how the media influences the youth through the movies. ‘Page 3is a landmark movie on the scenes that could influence the youth. Madhur Bhandarkar through various cinematic devices like the, songs, the cinematography, the dialogues, the scenes, the narration, the costumes, the song and music as well as the characterization in the film has conveyed the message.

The movie released in 2005 was a hit in the Indian Box office. Movies influence the minds of the young generation. The use of condom, the number of HIV/AIDS patient has increased in a tremendous way and India will soon lead itself on the top list beating Africa. The movie has mostly targeted the youth who are the ‘future of the nation’ and only through and their understanding of leading a better life

The movie is shot in the city of Mumbai, the director has been successful in depicting the place through the cinematic and the camera angles. The movie unfolds the various problems that take place in the society, especially the ones that are very little spoken of especially in the year 2004- 2005. The director in the movie portrays homosexuality but it is very difficult for the public to accept the fact that a person can be homosexual and that is not his fault that he is that way. ‘Page 3’ depicts the younger generation a lot and the struggle of many upcoming actors is shown. The director of ‘Page 3’ Madhur Bhandarkar is known as the film- maker who shows the reality he is concerned only with the mechanisms of the ugly existence. And in doing that, he pieces together the various elements of this way of life. Madhur Bhandarkar uses innumerable characters to further his motive. Whether it is a NRI who wants to be regular on page 3, the gate-crashers, the newly-rich, an upcoming model, a socialite politician or an erotic novel authoress, all the characters are introduced with an objective and each of them has a separate character-sketch.
India having such a vast population has the man power, this man power should be utilized and the best use of the population should be made. It has been proved that the television or movies make an impact on the youth then

‘Page 3’ mainly tries to show the different social problems and psychological problems that the people go through be it at work or at parties for example in the movie, there is a part when Madhvi realizes that her boyfriend is gay and he went out with her just for the sake of it, the worst of all Varun was having a relationship with Madhvis’s friend Abishekh, this made her feel very upset. Secondly, at work the editor Deepak Suri has to inform Madhvi to leave the job, for what she did, tried to tell the truth. In the history of Indian cinema not many movies have been made on the topic of journalism. There is only a hand full of films that dealt with the social messages that were sent through the eyes of a journalist.

The director has showcased the social messages in numerous ways. Homosexuality and the acceptance  in the society, Pedophile and the innocent children becoming a victim of them, the role the police plays along with the journalists, news reporters to have their informers to collect information and give it to the police in return for a small amount of money, the reasons for the spread of HIV/AIDS, adoption centers where abandoned children are left out and these kids can be adopted, politics and the media, drug abuse that is prevalent in the society, the freedom given to the children by the parents, having extra- marital sexual pleasures, death does not make any difference in the peoples life, Pre-marital sex in youngsters have grown in a big way. The movie has shown how fake the socialites are and the life that they lead.

The film was very innovative in its every aspect, still it can be termed as proper Bollywood movie that has all the elements like other Bollywood movies like naach (dance), gana (songs), masti (fun), pyaar (love), romance, fight and all other elements. In places like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, New Delhi, the gay community is emerging to a very big extent and Mumbai is leading them all. Mumbai has nearly half a dozen active gay support groups which is not the case in Delhi, Bangalore and Pune. The city has as magazine for homosexual -- Bombay Dost, Pune has two -- PUCK and The Queer Chronicle.

Limitations of the study
The researcher has analyzed only one movie that is ‘Page 3’. This could not be the case in all movies. Not all the social issues are highlighted in the movie.
