RECOMMENDATIONS & LIMITATIONS
5.1 CONCLUSIONS
This study was conducted to find if there was Influence of Nationalism in the
news reports of the Selected Newspapers while reporting the Commonwealth Games
2010.
In the study it was found that the beginning the Selected Newspaper
occasionally involved reporting the events of the Commonwealth Games 2010.
However, taking the cue from the opposition criticism the Selected Newspaper started
publishing allegations and responses of corruption and mismanagement in
commonwealth Games 2010.
The study also found that with no justifiable explanation for the delay in the
Games related work and the deadlines reaching closer. The Government of India
started to associate the importance of hosting a successful Commonwealth Games
event as a matter of national prestige. The Government of India sidelined the
Organising committee and took over the functions of the legally established body.
The government also deterred the Selected Newspaper from publishing negative
reports on Commonwealth Games 2010.
It is also found that following the reprimand by the Government of India, the
Selected Newspaper, highlighted greater number of positive and neutral stories on
Commonwealth 2010, than prior to the press conference, so it is evidently seen that
the Selected Newspaper were influenced voluntarily or involuntarily by the
Government of India on nationalism.
The study also revealed that showed that the Selected Newspaper only
demanded justification from organising committee and not from other agencies

involved. Moreover the Selected Newspaper did not question the Government of India
directly, since it had only a proxy role in coordinating with Commonwealth Games
related activities.
So the Selected Newspaper only focused their activities against the Organizing
committee and its head Suresh Kalmadi and did not enquire the Government’s lack of
monitoring the development progress of the Commonwealth Games.
The study also revealed that only a handful of irregularity and
misappropriation was uncovered by the Selected Newspaper on Commonwealth
Games 2010 due to indifferent attitude of the newspapers to research on the facts and
background information on the “Commonwealth Games 2010”. Therefore it can also
be concluded that media was not able to connect the missing link, thereby failing to
give a holistic approach to the entire episode of delay and irregularity in the
Commonwealth Games 2010.
5.2 IMPLICATIONS
The study shows that have irrespective of difference in agenda-setting and
vested interest the media can often share common sentiment or interest in certain
matters such as race, geographical belongingness, political or ideological inclination
or for that matter Nationalism towards the region the media caters. In an example the
position of Indian media over Pakistan and terrorism does not distinguishes between
the former and the latter, it unanimously treats both on same par.
Therefore it is an undeniable fact that the news and views media in this case
the Selected Newspaper is not comprehensive and reader, hence the contents in the
media must be critically examined from different perspectives, just as one inspect
food products before consumption.
